PCSing Overseas: Adjusting, So Far (Oct 23)

Well, we've managed to get into our house (apartment) on base! Our household goods haven't arrived yet, so we have temporary furniture on loan from the base, and a TV (courtesy of sweet hubs finding a deal at the Navy Exchange).

I cannot explain to you how anxious I am to receive our own things to furnish our place, and make it feel more like our home. I don't think it will be the huge relief I'm hoping for, so I'm trying to manage my expectations, but it is giving me something to look forward to, at least for comfort. Next time, I will definitely do a better job with the unaccompanied baggage packing!

The boys are adjusting well, and A is immediately acclimating better to this kindergarten than he was back in Tampa. I credit his teacher, who is very experience as a teacher for military children, with that. His class has already held a very adorable Kindergarten Convoy, where the kids each chose a letter of the alphabet and decorated a box to parade in for the parents. A got the letter A! We made an airplane out of a box we asked a NEX worker for, and put an anteater, aliens, astronauts, and Anakin Skywalker on it!

A's first day at school had a lot going on- not only did he attend his first day in a foreign country, and came "home" to temporary lodging, but he also lost his first tooth! His smile minus one tooth is really just the cutest, most charming thing I've ever seen.

I hope to meet some good friends here, and I wish there was a SLAM like back in Kansas; however, the agreements the US military made with the Italians prevent any spouses from owning their own franchise/business here, and so no one has been able to start one. In addition to that, a lot of the base services were cut due to COVID restrictions, and I am hoping those activities and services are returned to facilitate us meeting more folks during the week days when we can't necessarily travel to explore places that aren't within about an hour's drive.

We all miss Tampa and our friends and family back home, but we are also staying positive about all the exciting things we will get to do and explore in the next few years here!

Til next time,

Big A⚓
